If you're like me, you think about words like Peace Love Happiness as "feel good" words or concepts that everyone wants, but in today's world they seem harder and harder to achieve, or maybe even unreachable - both on a personal and global level. Why?
Negative news all around getting you down?
Yeah, me too! That's why I began my research on happiness. But what is happiness? Have you ever really asked yourself?
Here's Merriam-Webster's definition: "a: a state of well-being and contentment: joy b: a pleasurable or satisfying experience."
"A state of well-being and contentment," isn't that our ultimate goal as humans? Have you ever wondered what makes you happy and why you do the things you do? Basic needs for survival are a given, like food and shelter; everything else you do are things that are intended to make you happy or keep you from becoming unhappy. Agree? Nobody wants to be miserable (although I bet you've met some people who seem that way!). The problem is most of us get so caught up in our daily grind that we lose sight of why we do what we do.
WE WANT PEACE LOVE HAPPINESS, we just forget to remember.
Ah ha, "forget to remember." STOP IT! Stop forgetting to remember. There, that's all you need to do. Now you are happy, right?
Oh, it's not that easy, is it? Unfortunately not, but new research from the science and psychology of happiness worlds shows that those words - Peace Love Happiness - may not be so unreachable after all.
In her book The How of Happiness Sonja Lyubomirsky provides interesting empirical data that supports her idea that you can change your level of happiness. Dr. Lyubomirsky effectively argues that you have control over approximately forty percent of your happiness through "intentional activity." Surprisingly, only ten percent is the result of circumstances like environment, while the remaining fifty percent is thought to be your genetic set point, or the fixed amount of happiness you have no control over.
What Determines Happiness?
How you choose to respond to this data is up to you. The pessimist will not be too thrilled that most of their ability to be happy is predetermined and therefore won't want to make the effort to improve. My guess is though that YOU are reading this because you care about living a happier life and are excited that a significant forty percent of your level of happiness is in your hands!
So now what?
Where do you start?
Start with STRONG DESIRE. You gotta want it! Find it hard to get motivated? OK, here you go - happier people are more sociable, energetic, charitable, cooperative, better liked, more satisfied with their work, make more money, they are overall healthier with stronger immune systems and they live longer! Motivated now? If not, then read no further. I wish you all the best.
The most powerful force in the Universe is love. Follow Mr. Anthony's advice; commit to rid yourself of your self-inflicted emotions of anger and hate. The more you gain control of your negative emotions, the easier it will be to love. Decide to love yourself first, then love your spouse, love your family, love your friends, love everybody. The power of love is profound and contagious. Spread the love and peace will follow. Don't set out to change the world, concentrate on yourself, but spread the knowledge to family and friends. Do your part to make the world happier one person at a time. When there's more love, peace will flourish.
Money and Happiness
Does money bring happiness? You've heard that question before. You are probably like most people and know that it doesn't, not long term anyway. But it seems to be human nature to deny this fact. Material possessions are fun and nice, but have you ever bought anything that comes with a happiness guarantee? Nope. It doesn't happen and never will. The new car you bought made you happy, right. Yeah, but for how long? The thing is, material possessions can provide TEMPORARY happiness only, not real long-lasting happiness. Humans are built with an amazing ability to adapt to most any situation, it's called hedonic adaptation.
Marketing people are taught to feed off your constant need for a new happiness fix knowing the old one quickly wears off. So you want, or think you need, to buy new stuff only to adapt again and the happiness is gone.
True long-lasting Peace Love Happiness can only come from within. External material things are like a drug, they make us want more and more but they will never give us the eternal Peace Love Happiness high we all crave. Don't get me wrong, I love nice stuff. All things being equal, I'll take the mansion, luxury cars, boats and beach houses, but be happy within foremost and the nice stuff will come your way much easier.
The Universe offers all the Peace Love Happiness and everything else you desire - it's there for the taking. Make the choice to get your share.
